The most prominent genre in this video was comedy. One of the main rules of comedy is that it’s intended to make people laugh. This particular video does just that! Comedy is also defined by a conflict, silly situations, we, as the audience, can relate to some part of the storyline, the story can start to borderline “wrong.” The conflict is present in the relationship between Dr. Horrible and his arch nemesis Captain Hammer. These two appear to have some sort of negative history, because Captain Hammer tries to make Dr. Horrible mad, and Dr. Horrible wants to kill Captain Hammer. Some of the situations in this video can be quite silly such as when Dr. Horrible throws the controlling device on to the van and the device flies in such a way that defies all known laws of physics. We can also relate to Dr. Horrible in some aspects like when he wanted to talk to Penny but just couldn’t make himself speak to her. Most everyone has been through situations with crushes where we really want to talk to him/her but can’t do it for some reason. And, the story starts to go a little too far when Dr. Horrible goes crazy and freezes Captain Hammer with the intention of killing him and others. I think that Whedon’s use of the comedy genre and its rules strengthens this particular story because it makes it funny and relatable, and he makes me want to watch it again.
